Jul 2019 - Current
Electrical Engineer at GHD
I am currently working in the Energy and Resources team in Darwin, Northern Territory. I have experience in detailed design with substations, distribution networks, and renewable generation gained from exposure to projects in mining, industrial, and utility sectors. I have developed skills in high voltage design including the specification of equipment and hardware, and the arrangement of electrical systems to meet safety and compliance requirements.
Jun 2018 - Jul 2019
Statistician at Charles Darwin University
My role saw me undertake extraction, analysis and reporting of student data to meet the internal and external reporting obligations of both the Higher Education (HE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) sectors. My responsibilities included preparation, validation and submission of statutory data submissions, and the preparation of management reports to track student load and inform student load modeling/forecasting. The role was fundamental to developing and maintaining evidence-based student enrolment and load planning models for both HE and VET.
Mar 2017 - Jun 2018
PASS Coordinator at Charles Darwin University
I managed a co-curricular peer led Supplemental Instruction program. The role encompassed a broad spectrum responsibilities - to get a better idea of my capabilities, I have included a redacted version of the 2017 PASS annual report. My work in this role was recognised in 2017 when I was awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Award for outstanding contribution to student learning.
Apr 2017 - Dec 2017
Web Developer at Charles Darwin University
I was contracted to develop an experimental eLearning platform. The platform was based on a customised version of the Open EdX source code. Later in the year I was asked to develop a website to host an online symposium for the International Consortium of Academic Language and Learning Developers (ICALLD).
Jan 2014 - Dec 2020
CDU: Bachelor of Engineering (Elec)(Hons)
Received a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from Charles Darwin University. My honours thesis was accepted on December 2020, and explored novel load frequency control architectures using neural networks trained with deep reinforcement learning algorithms. You can read my thesis here.
Jan 2017 - Apr 2017
Systems Engineering Internship at Rockwell Collins
As part of a 3 month DEIP internship I worked as a Systems Engineer at Rockwell Collins, located in Sydney. The internship saw me contribute to the development of a message protocol used in a helmet mounted augmented reality system prototype.
Dec 2016 - Feb 2016
New Columbo Scholarship Recipient
I undertook an internship with Aurecon in Singapore. The placement saw me working in their Building Services discipline using Revit to deliver small scale 3D CAD models of residential dwellings to be used as proof of 3D modelling capabilty.
Aug 2015
SA Excellence in Public Education (Secondary) Finalist
Nominated as one of three finalists in the South Australian Excellence in Public Education Awards for recognition of my work teaching Senior School Mathematics.
Jan 2014 - Dec 2016
Senior Mathematics Teacher with DECD
Responsible for Stage 1 & Stage 2 Mathematics. Principle activities included Learning Assessment Plan design and implementation, teaching resource development, and management of daily student learning activities. My work in this role contributed to increases in both pass rates, and average final grades.
Dec 2013
QUT: Graduate Diploma of Education (Senior Years)
Received a Graduate Diploma of Education from the Queensland University of Technology at the end of 2013. The focus of this one year course was on senior mathematics and science. Completion of the qualification required two practicum placements with a combined duration of 55 days.
Jul 2013
DECD Teach for SA Scholarship Recipient
Recipient of one of three scholarships from a pool of over 100 candidates. The scholarships were valued at $40000 in addition to providing recipients with permanent tenure at a DECD country school.
Jan 2009 - Jul 2013
Financial Accountant at RACV
I was responsible for the preparation of monthly financial reports, as well as undertaking reconciliation in line with business and operational statutory requirements. My responsibilities also included the completion of monthly accruals, journals, and fixed assets depreciation schedules. Additionally, I oversaw daily accounting entries, undertook journal adjustments to correct errors as necessary, and assisted in the preparation of year end statutory accounts.
Jan 2008 - Dec 2013
University of Adelaide: Bachelor of Mathematics and Bachelor of Finance
Received a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science, majoring in Applied Mathematics. I also managed to squeeze a Bachelor of Finance degree in there too.
Bio. I am currently working as an electrical engineer focused on the detailed design of substations, and renewable generation systems. I came to electrical engineering rather obliquely and have had held a number of other appointments prior to this. Throughout 2017 to 2019 I worked for Charles Darwin University initially managing a co-curricular program and later as a statistician. I also dabbled in website development. In early 2017, I was a working as a Systems Engineer at Rockwell Collins, in Sydney, as part of the Defence Engineering Internship Program. During my time at Rockwell, I contributed to the developing a message protocol for a helmet mounted augmented reality device. I also managed to squeeze in another internship during early 2016 with Aurecon, in Singapore, after winning a New Columbo Scholarship offered by CDU. During this time I worked in the Building Services discipline modelling small to medium dwellings using Revit. Prior to commencing my studies at CDU I was awarded my Bachelor of Mathematical Science from The University of Adelaide in 2013, majoring in Applied Mathematics. My studies focused on modelling Stochasitic systems using discrete and continuous time Markovian Processes. In another life, I worked as a Financial Accountant after receiving my Bachelor of Finance from The University of Adelaide.

On the side (for fun) I operate a website called Nexus EdX. It's an educational platform which runs on the Open EdX source code, and is dedicated to helping others learn Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In 2017 CDU sought to leverage the knowledge that I had developed over this time and employed me to develop an experimental eLearning platform based on the Open EdX source code, called CDUX.

Knowledge Map

I've been forever obsessed with creating a map of the knowledge of all the subjects I've studied - which is quite a bit...I've probably overcapitalised. Anyway, here is most of it. The red dots are projects. Other colours are subjects. Click on stuff.

Teaching

Nexus EdX
I love teaching. I was a bit sad when I gave up teaching maths to follow my other passions (e.g. electrical engineering). I run this site, Nexus EdX, which gives me some capacity to get my chalk and talk happening once more. The platform runs on the open source code which powers EdX, and offers a selection of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics subjects. The course content is made up of short 10 minute videos, which are punctuated by exercises to help learners solidify their understanding. The cost to use the site is $40 per subject per semester, but if you want to view the videos for free, I have them listed on YouTube.
